PRP is an excellent hair restoration treatment for hair loss with scientific literature that supports its use.
PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is blood plasma that contains a concentrated source of platelets. It is derived from drawing your blood and separating it to extract a concentrated serum of platelets. Within each dormant hair shaft there are stem cells responsible for the growth cycle of hair. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) when introduced to the scalp will activate a dormant hair follicle and allow for new hair growth. It does so by the release of growth factors that trigger stem cells to cause new cell proliferation.
For the procedure, Dr. Peterson will numb the scalp for comfort. The PRP is injected into the scalp then is followed by microneedling and an additional coating of plasma for optimal results. The treatment schedule is three treatments performed one month apart followed by a treatment every six months to maintain results. Maintenance treatment is needed because the growth factors released by the platelets are used up by the hair follicles over many months. Studies show that 25-50% of patients see hair growth improvement.
